Coal Mine – Loctite PC 7218

Case Study: Restoring the Dredger Side Walls – A Smarter Approach to Erosion Protection

The Challenge

A major coal mine in Victoria was encountering significant erosive wear on the inner surfaces of its overburden dredger. Conventional welding-based repair methods were not only labor-intensive but also resulted in extended equipment downtime and elevated maintenance costs.

Henkel’s Solution

Seeking a faster and more cost-effective alternative to welding, the mine partnered with Henkel. Our Certified Applicator delivered a proven solution that minimized downtime and maximized durability.

Following meticulous surface preparation, Loctite® PC 7218 Wearing Compound was applied to rebuild and reinforce the eroded area. To further enhance protection and extend service life, a top coat of Loctite® 7227 Brushable Ceramic was added—providing a tough, wear-resistant finish designed to withstand harsh conditions.

The Outcome

  • The solution has delivered reliable performance with no issues reported after 3 years in operation
  • Significant cost savings were achieved by eliminating the need for conventional welding repairs
  • Enhanced wear resistance extended the service life of the equipment, reducing maintenance frequency

“We were impressed not just by the initial results—but by how well the solution held up over time.”
— Site Manager, Coal Mine (Victoria)

Thanks to the Loctite solution, the mine gained more than just a repair—they gained peace of mind.
